A strong farm-income year deserves a three-year lookback

Farm income rarely arrives in a smooth line. A strong grain sale, a livestock cycle or a recovery after a difficult season can put more taxable income into one year than the family normally earns. Before buying something merely to reduce that year's income, ask whether farm income averaging should be modeled.
